The 2025 Australian Fitness Journey: Shape Thyself Anew

Author – Pooja Kumari

Exercise is Boring! No doubt it is.

So why should I exercise? Can’t we skip it?

Are there any cool inventions or other alternatives that can easily melt away all those extra pounds?

Do not tell me to cut down on carbs and fats.

I’m a sweet tooth, I can’t help it.

I don’t want to follow those strict, fad diets.

Also, don’t forget YOLO!

Sounds like you, right? This is not you, this is literally everyone (obviously, except those fitness freaks).

The question is: Why does everybody hate exercising and eating healthy, nutritious food? And how can one be fit?

Let’s find out!

What Does Australian Fitness Say?

Get ready, I’m gonna spill out a wild series of truths revealing why the Aussie souls must nurture their bodies with nutrient-filled diets and physical activity.

  • 83% of Aussie teens aged 15-17 avoid the gym.
  • 41% of adults also reject the gym and physical activity.
  • Only 24.5% of adults aged 18-64 meet the minimum physical activity guidelines.
  • Physical inactivity contributes to 5.2% of deaths in Australia.

Cracking the Code

Alright, gather ’round, I’m about to take you on a jubilant metamorphosis. This story is divided into 4 crucial chapters that will unveil why staying fit is more important than you might think. So, let’s dive in!

Chapter 1: Discusses– Why We Need Proper Diet and Regular Physical Activity?

Chapter 2: Shows Two Major Factors to Stay Fit.

Chapter 3: The Four Pillars to Work on for Good Health and Fitness.

To Be Well, To Be Whole: A Tale of Health and Wealth

Chapter 1: The Empire’s Struggle

Our body is a huge empire and each part is a land ruled by its own territory, possessing different roles to bring prosperity to a greater kingdom.

To protect these territories comprising the Mighty Brain Mountains, Muscle Plains, Digestive Valleys and Emperor Heart, we need to have a proper set of built armies.

Over time, the empire has begun to crumble, slowly and steadily as the time passes. Territories are growing weaker, borders weakened and once a ball of energy has now become sluggish and sick.

So, How do we fix it? How do we strengthen our armies? Simple– Nutrition & Exercise. Admit it, this is not negotiable.

Chapter 2: Pursuit of the Infinite Balance

Now, let’s zoom in on where we should place our focus and how mastering proper fitness can shape each of these distinct realms. Welcome to the “Pursuit of the Infinite Balance,” a quest that uncovers two legendary treasures: one for the body and one for the mind. Both, when harmonised, unlock the ultimate power to conquer every challenge that comes your way. Ready for the adventure? Here are our two jewels!

  • Exercise: The Power Pillars
  • Nourishment: The Holy Grail of Healthy Eats

Now, these two little gems take into account 4 heroes–

Our legs, which carry us on epic adventures; our stomach, the mighty cauldron of nourishment and absorption; our arms, the true champions of strength; and the mind, the unsung hero that keeps everything from turning into pure chaos—are all pivotal players in the quest of life.

Without them, where would our kingdom be? Lost, hungry, weak and scattered.

Chapter 3: The 4 Heroes

As discussed earlier, the 4 heroes of the quest have been assigned full-fledged strategies to guide our empire.

  • The Legs: CARDIO– Movement is the foundation of life. It strengthens the entire empire. Running, walking and jumping not only help with building muscles but also energise the heart and lungs.
  • The Arms: RESISTANCE TRAINING– Strength training builds resilience, not just in muscles but in spirit. Lifting, pulling and pushing strengthened the muscles, bones and even the heart.
  • The Stomach: FUELING– Healthy food is the fuel for every territory’s success. Healthy foods are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre which cannot be escaped.
  • The Mind: CLARITY– Remember Mind Over Matter. A strong mind is the key to lasting well-being. Through meditation and reflection, they found that mental health guided every decision and kept the empire in harmony.

We’ve learnt about the basics of building strength. Now let us look at what exactly we need to do and how people can easily incorporate fitness in their busy life.

Now it’s time to bring out the big guns—DIET and DRILL!

Diet: The First Domino

Yes, diet is the first domino, just make sure to get it right and you’ll see everything else starts falling into place.

Remember the key is to eat local and stick to your roots. It is that simple. No fancy ingredients, just simple home-cooked, locally sourced vegetables and foods are enough to fulfil all the nutrient deficits happening in your body.

Don’t Throw Only a Shrimp on The Barbie

Not only shrimp, oops… I mean prawns, but all other lean meats like chicken, fish or kangaroo can be your go-to meal as barbequed food is one of the healthy options to include in your diet.

Grill it up with your favourite veggies, throw in a slice of pineapple and you’re done. A power-packed nutritious meal is ready. Honestly, at this point, the only thing missing is a koala handing you a cold beer while you contemplate life’s greatest mystery: Why does pineapple even go on pizza?

Fun Fact: It’s like eating a muscle-bound marsupial that could probably beat you in an arm wrestle.

Yeah, That’s Not an Acai Bowl…That’s an Acai Bowl!

Alright, it’s fact time!

2025 is here.

You’re on Instagram, because what else is there?

Young, fine but struggling because nobody’s impressed unless you put up something fancy.

If these points are correct then you might eventually get bored and would need something sumptuous, right?

Acai Bowls are your escape! These stand between you and your mid-life crisis, spooning superfood, making life majestic.

If there’s something more packed other than beaches in Australia, they are for sure these healthy bowls. Blend acai berries with bananas, and almond milk and top it off with granola, coconut and fresh fruit. You’re sorted!

Fun Fact: Acai berries help fight UV rays and stress so you can say I don’t age, I glow!

Fresh Seafood: You Had Me at Prawns!

Seafood and Australians are best friends. No doubt they are. Packed with omega-3 and lean protein, it fulfils the necessary deficits in your body and must be included in your diet. They are so fresh that might make you think, “Has this fish just jumped out directly from the freshwater to my plate?”

Fun Fact: Aussie sardines fulfil 40% of your daily calcium in one tin—who needs a cow then?

Vegemite’s In: Tell Me I’m Dreaming.

There is no stronger relationship than that of an Aussie and Vegemite. If you don’t believe me, I have my stats ready.

  • 80% of households have Vegemite.
  • 22 million jars are produced annually.
  • 300,000 jars are made daily.
  • Average consumption: 1 jar per person per year.
  • 39% of Australians consume it weekly.
  • 1 in 3 Australians take it when traveling.

Alright, Aussie legends, you don’t have to dump your Vegemite just yet! Spread it on whole-grain toast, or if you’re feeling intrepid, slather it with avocado. It’s healthy and salty, just the way you like it.

Fun Fact: Vegemite is the secret fitness fuel, packing B vitamins to keep you bouncing through your workout and beyond!

Now that the plates are cleared, strap in, because this next phase is your fitness evolution!

Workout: Quick Moves for Busy Grooves

It might feel challenging at first but I promise you’ll end up loving these. The very first thing you need to understand is fitness isn’t a 30-day challenge, rather you need to make sure it becomes a major part of your lifestyle.

Remember: The idea of change seems difficult but is necessary.

Do not worry, I’ll make this transformation into a party!

Shake It Like an Aussie: Dance Your Way to Health

What better than to start this journey with a celebration that includes throwing your hands and legs up and down to that beating rhythm. And I know, it’s much easier when you’re an Aussie!

Australian-Fitness-05
  • Aussie Hip-Hop Dance: Take out your flashiest outfit and get ready to rock’n roll. Make sure it’s mad enough that your grandma couldn’t stop herself from calling 911.
    • The best options are: Dance Fit Studio – Wentworth Point and Dance Dynamics Malvern. If you don’t have the time to visit the dance studio, they offer online classes too.
  • Zumba with Aussie Hits: Slick on that sweatband and dance your heart out to Aussie pop hits. I know it’s hard to catch your breath and pick that beat where Kylie Minogue is telling you, “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” simultaneously. Be consistent and in no time you’ll be auditioning for “Australia’s Next Top Zumba Star.”
    • Check the Zumba with Lola – Adelaide City and United by Keren Coaching & Zumba. They are amazing!
  • Traditional Aussie Dance (Bush Dancing): What I told you in the beginning? “Stick to your roots”. Yes, this is the right time to channel your inner bushranger. You’ll be stomping, clapping and attempting the “gum nut” dance, which I know sounds like a part of a plant. No one is judging you, it is just about having fun and making sure nobody steps on your toes.

Bonus: Music Helps with Stress Relief. These workouts are energetic and that upbeat music just lifts up the spirit and manages cortisol levels.

The Gym and You: Stronger Together

I have something to show you. You guessed it right, the stats again!

  • 4.5M+ Aussies have gym memberships, that is, one of the highest rates globally.
  • Aussies work out everywhere! Parks, beaches, even public transport, just name it.
  • The “Aussie push-up” (wide hands) is a famous gym trend.
  • Gym attendance spikes in summer for beach prep. Huh, no doubts!
  • F45, an Aussie brand, has 1,750+ studios worldwide.
  • Aussies top the world in #gymselfies on Instagram. Woah!

So, what are you waiting for? Lift those dumbbells, barbells and heavy weights and get stronger every day.

Some of the crazy ones include Bodyapeel Gym – Mandurah, Anytime Fitness, Functional Fitness Personal Training & Gym – Newstead and World Gym Castlereagh.

Bonus: Lifting Weight = Lifting Confidence. Gyming regularly makes a huge impact on self-esteem and confidence.

The Fitness Lab: Weekly Workouts to Try

Make your everyday workout routine fun while experimenting with fitness. You can introduce a rotating theme for each week with different fitness challenges and goals. Make sure these exercises are out-of-box to make it a never-ending story for that ultimate motivation.

How to do it? It’s simple.

Step 1: Pick an exercise for each week such as HIIT or Strength Training.

Step 2: Add a mini experiment to it. Like doing Strength Training without dumbbells, or HIIT for Stress relief.

And you’re done.

Bonus: You’re not only training your body with this but your mind’s pushing limits too!

Beaches and Barbells

Australian-Fitness-04

Want to ditch the gym? No worries, you’re lucky, you have the Aussie sunshine to embrace!

The love that I share for beaches, is no wonder why it’s on the list. I could have been easily appointed as a wave watcher if there’s a profession like that. But don’t be like me, there are multiple things you can do on a beach to make exercise fun.

  • Running: I’m not judging but when you’re asked to run on a treadmill, it seems like a heavy workout for your thicc thi– I mean legs. At the same time, on beaches, you run until you’re out of breath, suffering with a smile while chasing your kids, partner, friends, and whoever is there. That’s cheating. Yes, I’m not being dramatic but yes you are cheating on yourself. Next time you visit a beach, be sure to run for yourself.
  • Swimming: With this activity, you’re a superhero, no, I’m not kidding. Strengthen your heart, muscles and ability to accidentally invent new swimming strokes. Don’t worry, start with the panicked penguin pose, it won’t take much time to transform into a golden glider.
  • Beach Volleyball: Playing on the beach is another terrific way to incorporate movement into your life. It’s great for your reflexes and cardio. Just stay awake and don’t let the ball spike your face, or the next moment you’ll be dealing with your existential crisis again.

Bonus: If you Train Barefoot, you Move Better! The sand not only fires up your foot and ankle strength but also the unstable surfaces stabilise muscles better, especially your core, glutes and legs.

Outdoor Escapes for Thrill Seekers

Be prepared to question your life choices. Just kiddin’! Australia is known for its beautiful outdoor landscapes, so why not take advantage of that? Just remember one thing that the villain is your own stamina.

Soak in Nature. Be Grounded. Make it Fun. Play Treasure Hunts. Or straight-up check out Boot

Camps such as OutX Fitness are an amazing alternative to conventional gyms.

Simply explore the Aussie bush, and go hiking in places like the Blue Mountains or along coastal trails. Fitness is something you can’t just rely on in a particular setting. Make it a part of yourself.

Bonus: You Build Core Memory Along with Muscles. It’s obvious no one remembers their best treadmill workout but journeys and adventures are often that make the memories.

Finishing Strong: The Key Takeaways!

Well, well, well… look who made it to the end of the fitness guide.

It is definitely hard, but I believe staying fit doesn’t have to suck the joy out of one’s life. You don’t have to compromise on taste, fun and life at all. Small changes. That’s all!

Dance like a lunatic with those headsets on in your room like nobody’s watching, and name it cardio.

Lift your 100-pound girlfriend 20 reps, and your first step towards resistance training is done.

Yes, it’s that simple. Don’t treat it as a punishment. Don’t be obsessed over those abs not showing up, be grateful that your legs can carry you to the washroom in urgency.

Balance and Consistency are the keys, and you’re sorted. That’s real fitness.
